This is for "Tortillas Frescas". I haveto say hands down my favorite food memories from the ranch were times when we'd go look for mushrooms. And then later eat them after they'd been sauteed in butter! But the search was so magical and fun. I think it would be a cool bit of closure if I were to find one last pile of mushrooms on the ranch...

Regarding the title of this post, its a sort of joking reference to something Kelly Getz taught me to scribble all over my notebooks in middle school. You'd draw a smurfy mushroom, then arc "mushrooms-R-magic" over the top. I had no idea what that was supposed to mean. I just knew it was vey cool.

This is an excerpt from a nytimes.com article on a self-made shoe designer in New York -who apparently loosely inspired part of the storyline in the movie "P.S. I Love You". The last sentence in this excerpt is exactly why I really hesitate to be serious about entering the fashion world:

Late last Friday, Mr. Lisbona’s shoes had come back from Johnny Angel (John Sanches, of Hector’s Shoe Repair on Sixth Avenue). They were perched on Ms. Neithardt’s white lacquer dining table. Elegant, sculptural, utterly unique, the mules were so lovely that no one spoke for a beat or two.

“You are so beautiful,” Ms. Neithardt cooed in a little girl voice.

“Thank you Aunt Llorraine,” Mr. Lisbona said.

Ms. Neithardt raised an eloquent eyebrow. “You created that,” she said. “And you don’t have to send it to college.”

These are the first sandals/shoes I've made since being back from Italy. I did flip flops because they're easy and cheap, although I still didn't get them right the first try. I will have to undo the glued-on sole and re-adjust the strap because I made it too tight. The denim is from a pair of Sarah's jeans that she probably wore in either high school or college. I've saved them all these years wanting something special enough for which to use the treasured fabric. The blue canvas came from Aunt Marianne who recently bestowed me with the coolest hand-me-down gift ever: an assortment of textiles that she had collected over the years. Another fyi: I had to finish the shape of the soles free-hand using a sanding machine. Nothing is really easy and quick in shoe-making, not even flip-flops... But its fun and I'm planning on doing a project every week or two with the generous help of Jeff Mandel, a custom shoemaker in Portland with an equipped studio space. I have his blog linked under the caption: "People I don't know" (even tho I now know him).

Grandma Dine had tons of medical notepads bound in rubber bands and wrapped in old plastic grocery bags. I took out the cutest and most "retro" looking. Maybe she was a kindred spirit in that she needed to often (incessantly, obsessively) scribble down random thoughts [see above and below] on paper. I turned over one of the notepads yesterday and discovered her notes. What a charming and surprising way to be reminded that she was once alive and had life's mundane things to remember such as "envelope, postage and park" [below].

Bargain Extravaganza

I just paid 20% of original price for a pair of Citizens of Humanity skinny jeans. I bought them at the Reno Macy's for $60 with tax as opposed to $163 tag price. Then the store clerk said if I came back on Saturday she could take another 40% off. I was back in Portland by then but went to the Macy's here to see if it would work here. It did! So I got the tax refunded, and only paid $34.23. I agreed to give $5 to food drive, and get to enter into a raffle for $500. I REALLY hope I win. I'm actually going to put off Christmas shopping until Oct. 17th -the day of the raffle ;)

At any rate, I'm obviously proud of my bargain deal to post about it on my uber popular blog for all to read about.

I was just remembering the two big, deep drawers in our old house's kitchen. The top one with the cake decorations and sprinkles way in the back. What else did we put in there? Bread I think. And then the big buckets of flower and rolling pins in the bottom one. I really wish I could go back to these old places and take photos. And if I could go back there, I'd take pictures of the garden. And every single other detail that I LOVED about that house.

Sweatpants -I'm really blogging!

I bought sweatpants today and I love them already. I had intended the purchase to be so I could jog in something warm and baggy-but I'm thinking I like them so much I want to take care of them. But I'll have to get over that and just think ahead at how soft they'll be after years of washing. My inspirations were #1 -a pair of maroon sweatpants that Gegi used to wear jogging at their first house in Seattle, which were actually George's, #2 -on morning or afternoon regional trains in Italy, when kids were commuting to school, about 75% or more of the boys were wearing sweatpants. How lucky. So comfortable, and with their big sunglasses and gelled hair, was so Italian and not jockish, #3 -my little 4 yr. old nephew is an Italian at heart as sweatpants are apparently "his favorite" -this is what my sister said when he was opening his birthday present to encourage enthusiasm and excitement over his gifts, "Look Eliot, sweatpants! Your favorite!" I'd wanted to get maroon sweatpants and was sure American Apparel would have them (and I even had a gift certificate), but they didn't! How on earth is it that the one item of clothing they don't have in 50 differnet colors, is the one I want to buy? But today I went shopping because, if only you knew, I needed it. And Macy's in Reno is so great because they have tons of sales racks with surprisingly really great stuff. I not only found my sweatpants (greyish with two small patches of purple and black cheetah print, they're somewhat discreet), but some nice clothes that fit. So I can start dressing cute at the beginning of the day and not just wear my usual outfits. For example, I'm wearing the white Winters Glenbrook Reunion sweatshirt and an orange t-shirt I recently found in the kids dress-up trunk in the attic. It has some big graphic on it with a scarecrow. I've never actually paid attention to what it actually says....

Hi,
I'll start posting now I think. I like my page better so that should help. I'll start bringing my camera with me everyday so that on the very rare day that you can see the San Marino mountains I'll be able to show you. And I really want to get a foto of the small veg. garden near the school that has the most luscious looking lettuce growing. Or the funky little trio of ponies that graze once in a while in a random field by one of the industrial buildings across from school. There's a regular sized paint pony, a short stout miniature white one, and then a little teeny one that isn't so stout so I wasn't sure if it was a colt. It's not. It's a miniature but it must be young because quite often it feels the urge to jet across the field and throw its head back. This kept me entertained while Dario explained for the second time (for a classmate who came in late) about the pattern for a "Francesina". So hopefully I'll have fotos to accompany my next post.

Me Like coming home and finding three people already in the process of making dinner. Its a cooking course for one chinese girl, and there was the teacher -Luca, and a colleague, friend -Giana. I had totally forgotten that there was a class scheduled for thursday night (I live in a flat where my language school uses to host cooking lessons) and had just been to the grocery store, sadly was uninspired and only bought juice (spremuta di arancia rossa), yogurt, eggs, pasta, and marinara. Lucky me to have a three course meal with wine and marsala! Meals from cooking courses aren't actually that good b/c totally ignorant students are left to fry eggplant or know when to add what for a risotto, but that really isn't the point. The point is: free food, free wine, and talking in italian to italians who have interesting things to say, like their mom paints on shoes and sells them (this was Giana, a super friendly, laid back signora).
